More success for Aldwych Speed Skaters at British Long Track Championship.

The UK Longtrack British Champs has to be held in Holland as we don't have a 400m rink in the UK. This year we went back to The Hauge for the second year for two days over the Easter weekend, with many arriving early for some last minute training. The rink (called De Uithof) has two hockey pads, a ski slope, a karting track, indoor climbing, a cafe, and skate shop and is about a 20 minute drive from the Harwich ferry, or easily accessible from Amsterdam airport. So lots of things to do for those that didn't skate.

The Aldwych club was the largest club present by some margin, giving us a big head start in the team competition. The team included Abby, Sola Dring, Alison Murray, Theo Collins, Anton Carter, the three Peters; Riches, Carter and Carr, Clare Upton, Matiss Ipolito. (With others attending in a social capacity).

Other UK teams came from Ipswich and the Fen Centre as well as a individual skaters from the UK short track and inline scenes. Joining those were ex-pats living in Holland and invited international skaters from Holland, Kazakhstan, Belgium, Ireland, Denmark and Norway.

The events followed a similar pattern to last year with options of doing three sprints (500m, 1000m and 1500m) or choosing from one of the two longer distances (3000m or 5000m) and a 500m. Added to that, this year we had a second day after a social event on the Saturday night, with a supersprint, mass start and team pursuit.

How the team did: Generally very well, with lots of PBs, with almost everyone went faster in one of their distances. In the individual events our podiums were:

500m Junior Boys (up to 15) - Peter Riches 1st 500m Ladies - Clare Upton 2nd

1000m Men - Peter Riches 3rd 1000m Ladies - Alison Murray 3rd

1500m Men - Peter Riches 2nd 1500m Ladies - Alison Murray 3rd

3000m Men - Peter Carr 3rd

5000m Ladies - Clare Upton 1st

Supersprint. (2x 100m and 2x 300m with times averaged): Men - Peter Riches in a close 3rd Ladies - Alison Murray 2nd

Team pursuit held over twelve laps. The Aldwych team of Anton Carter, Peter Riches and Peter Carr went out with careful pacing and co-ordination meaning the team stayed together (time is taken from the last man and all have to finish) and gave us the fastest time of all the UK club teams, beaten into 5th by the UK squad or local Dutch teams.

Mass start (12 lap points race, with a sprint half way)

This was a first time for this event for many, and with the difference in standards it was going to be fun, the ladies race went off tactically with Clare skating to a pace that let her catch the pack after the sprint lap and hold almost till the end, but she got 3rd Brit home.

The men’s race was a bigger affair with Aldwych showing a lot at the front for the early running before the sprint lap when the more experienced marathon skaters made their run that broke the pack up, Peter Riches went with that move and was 2nd Brit home.

A combination of number of people and good showings in all events (Clare and Peter Riches making much of the running) meant Aldwych won the team trophy, visible in the Spectrum trophy cabinet.
